EPR

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing wastes in the world. India currently produces around 50 million tons of tonnes per year, and the number will increase if electronic products are still available. E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to electrical and electronic devices that are outdated, undesired, or defective. This includes everything from smartphones to fridges that have reached the end of their lifespan.

E-waste management is the technique of collecting the E-waste, Recycling, Reuse, Disposal, and ecological ways to minimize harmful effects on the environment and human health. Management of e-waste is a major challenge as it directly affects human health and the environment, and this is done due to lack of awareness. The growing issues of e-waste require a strong emphasis on recycling e-waste and better e-management.

E-waste (management) rules 2022

According to the regulations, all manufacturers, producers, and recyclers must register with the portal to collect and ensure recycling or disposal of electronic waste generated during the production, renovation, or disposal of electrical and electronic equipment. Companies must register with the portal as part of the corresponding category, such as manufacturer, producer, refurbisher, or recycler. If a company is divided into multiple categories, it must be registered individually in each category. It is illegal for businesses to run their business without registration.

These regulations apply to all manufacturers, producers, refurbishers, and recyclers engaged in the production, sale, transfer, purchase, refurbishment, recycling, and processing of e-waste or electrical and electronic devices in Appendix I.

The Central Pollution Control Board may request registration fees and annual maintenance fees from designated, recycled, or recycling companies with approval from the Steering Committee under these regulations based on the capabilities of the Central Pollution Control Board.
